The task which has been laid upon me, and which I have felt it an honor to undertake, has been to prepare a simple and untechnical narrative of the history of the Company which, for those of its friends who were familiar with its earlier days, might freshen their own recollection, and for those whose acquaintance with it has been more recent, might link the past with the pres ent in a clearer understanding of how worthily the Company has fulfilled the expectation of its founders.
