Sinopsis

Adherence is the term used to describe a person's compliance with a particular descriptive, for example, a rigid exercise regime when pursuing sport as a career. Adherence is affected by motivation levels, social support and the person's perceived value of the descriptive. This text addresses the issues of adherence relating to sport from different psychological perspectives. It focuses first on issues in exercise and physical activity: social influences, motivation in children, primary health care exercise promotion schemes, and exercise for clinical populations, for example those with diabetes, asthma or osteoporosis. It then goes on to look at these issues in relation specifically to sport - adherence to sport injury rehabilitation programmes, mental skills training in sport, the role of coaches and parents in adhering to sport, athletic counselling, and changing practices. Each chapter concludes with a useful synopsis of practical recommendations

De la contraportada

The need to understand and predict adherence behaviour within sport and exercise domains is an increasingly important issue to professionals and academics in the area. It is, however, a complex area of study, and in recent years an emerging research focus on domains beyond conventional exercise adherence has significantly broadened the interest in this issue. This is the first book to pull together a wide range of current adherence themes from within sport, as well as exercise. It provides the reader with an understanding of the many theoretical approaches being used to investigate this area. Eminent experts from Europe and North America discuss how adherence is affected by motivation levels, social support and perceived vlue of the goal. Each chapter provides a theoretical framework and a range of practical implications for professionals. Topics covered include:

  • adherence in primary health care exercise promotion schemes
  • exercise adherence in clincal populations and children
  • adherence to sport injury rehabilitation programes
  • psychological preparation in sport
  • methodological issues in research and applied practice
This volume is essential reading for sport and exercise psychologists, exercise and health researchers and students of health studies, sport science, physical education, leisure studies and psychology. It is a valuable resource for a range of health professionals, including physiotherapists, fitness consultants and personal trainers, and all those with an interest in, or need to understand, adherdnce behaviour in sport and exercise.
