The finite element method is a numerical modelling technique which requires the subdivision of a region (surface or volume) into small elements, of which the response characteristics of each are described in a simplified way. This book shows how to develop computer programs which solve specific engineering problems using the finite element method. It should enable students to assemble their own computer programs to produce numerical results to solve these problems. This revised third edition has all programs completely re-written in Fortran 90. Features include: a complete up-grade to Fortran 90; all the Fortran programs and subroutines are listed in full in the text but should also be made available on the Internet via anonymous ftp; programs illustrating analytic rather than numerical evaluation of element properties; wide variety of problems solved: classical structural analysis, elasticity and plasticity, steady state and transient fluid flow, linear and nonlinear solid dynamics and construction processes in Geomechanics. m
