Taphonomy is the study of the process whereby living organisms become fossils, and involves not only the organisms themselves but also their entire environment and the circumstances of their deposition and preservation. As such, it is of fundamental importance for palaeontologists, evolutionists, palaeoecologists and stratigraphers, and this book fulfils a long-felt want for an up-to-date review of taphonomic principles and methods, emphasizing sedimentological and palaeoenvironmental evidence, as well as that provided by fossil material itself. Following the model of his previous book on "Mass Extinctions" (Belhaven 1989), the editor has invited leading workers in the field to contribute review chapters which together comprise a comprehensive and authoritative conspectus of the field.
