Books on environmental issues are not a novelty: all the issues presented in this text have received widespread attention in both the popular and academic media. However, with the increasing number of new courses in institutes of higher education that cover these issues and with their inclusion in 'A' level syllabuses the editors believe that an introductory text such as this, which covers a wide variety of social and physical issues, is necessary. They have aimed to provide a thorough introduction to each topic. The text thus should be of value to sixth formers and first-year undergraduates as a foundation for the pursuit of further study. This is a subject that has long acknowledged the importance of studying the relationships between the physical and human environment. The discussions in this book of both the physical and social processes which affect the environment, emphasize the need to focus on the relationships when evaluating the environmental issues of the 1990s.
