About the editor
RAVENDER GOYAL is Product Manager in the PCB Division of Mentor Graphics Corporation, Wilsonville, Oregon. He is responsible for high speed digital and RF/ Telecom system design strategy. Previously, he was director of foundry services and design automation at Anadigics, Inc., developing GaAs-based analog, digital, and RF circuits. He received a master of technology degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, in 1979, and an MS in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1981.
Mr. Goyal, a senior member of IEEE, has authored more than 45 technical journal, conference, and invited papers and is the coauthor of the book Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits: Technology and Design. He is a member of the Editorial Board and the Technical Program Committee of IEEE/MTTs.
The wireless communication revolution is bringing fundamental changes to the communication and computer industries. The 1990s will see the solidification of the ultimate technological vision: inexpensive, handheld devices able to communicate by voice, data, or picture and accessible through a single phone number regardless of location. The main forces driving this development include allocation of new frequencies by the FCC, development of international communication standards, consumer need for portable and mobile communications, and the technological breakthrough in high frequency IC manufacturing.
The last few years have seen a number of important advances in manufacturing technology for GaAs MESFET-based IC processing. The newfound ability to apply silicon design techniques to reliable GaAs materials and devices represents a boon to the communications industry in which high-speed processing is of the essence. As a consequence, there is a growing demand for engineers fully versed in GaAs design technology. Yet, until now, there was no practical guide to designing for this breakthrough technology.
Offering comprehensive coverage of state-of-the-art GaAs MESFET technology and design techniques for analog ICs, this book features detailed, step-by-step guidance on everything from basic concepts such as biasing network, current source, current mirrors, and differential circuits; to more complex designs, such as amplifiers, mixers, oscillators, and operational amplifier designs; and finally, high-level functions such as A/D and D/A converters and their implementation in GaAs technology.
A valuable tool for professionals working in the field, High-Frequency Analog Integrated Circuit-Design offers designers experienced in silicon analog circuit design techniques a rare opportunity to expand their design repertoire to circuits operating at RF and lower microwave frequencies. At the same time, designers trained in microwave IC design will find this text very useful in extending their knowledge to analog design techniques. And, due to its superior pedagogical format, this book can serve equally well as a textbook for senior or graduate-level circuit design courses.
Thanks to recent breakthroughs in manufacturing technology for GaAs MESFET-based IC processing, circuit designers can now design high precision, high performance analog circuits working at microwave frequencies using GaAs technology. As a consequence, engineers fully versed in GaAs design technology are at a premium within the communications industry. This practical guide was designed to get you quickly up and running with all the technical expertise you need to execute circuit designs using this breakthrough technology. If you are a designer experienced in silicon analog circuit design techniques, this book gives you an opportunity to expand your design repertoire to circuits operating at RF and lower microwave frequencies. If, on the other hand, your training is in microwave IC design and you are already familiar with GaAs MESFET, this valuable professional tool enables you to add analog techniques to your list of credentials.
