Most expert systems built today are constructed with the use of an expert system "shell". This book shows ES developers how an expert system is conceived and built using commercially available ES shells. By combining three fundamental components - theory, practice and a narrative example - the text provides a unique learning environment. This book covers all major AI paradigms with an extensive, realistic case study - introduces each new concept in the context of a typical project; offers guidance for planning all phases of the ES project, from initial evaluation of the problem to evaluation of alternative solutions to translation of expertise into the computer to refinement and maintenance with special sections on modelling, simulation and interfacing with the outside world.
