It offers detailed guidance on when to monitor safety and performance, and how to do it well. The planning of monitoring programs and the writing of construction specifications are described; and there is an evaluation of monitoring methods, selection of instruments, instrument calibration, installation, and maintenance, and the collection, processing, and interpretation of instrumental data. The author explains the role of geotechnical instrumentation in the construction and operation phases of various civil engineering projects: braced excavations, embankments on soft ground, embankment dams, excavated and natural slopes, underground excavations, driven piles, and drilled shafts.
