Combining medication and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be challenging but can also enhance patient care. This book reviews the existing literature about the neurobiological and clinical basis in combining CBT and medication for non-psychiatrist mental health clinicians. Filled with case studies drawn from the author's extensive clinical and teaching experience, this book breaks new ground in bringing together the most current, proven protocols for using drugs and CBT to improve client care. Practitioners will find in this volume the tools to make informed recommendations to patients.

Praise for Combining CBT and Medication
"Combining CBT and Medication should be required reading for psychiatrists, primary care physicians, psychiatric nurses, and mental health professionals. This excellent, readable book by a leading psychiatrist who specializes in CBT offers essential guidelines, based on research, for clinicians—whether they provide psychiatric medication, therapy, or both."
—Judith S. Beck, PhD, President, Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research; Clinical Associate Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania
"Combining CBT and Medication: An Evidence-Based Approach by Dr. Donna Sudak is a valuable—no, let me say, an essential—book for every practicing clinician. Clearly written with many examples, strategies, and tips for any practitioner who really wants to provide optimal care. I know I will be recommending this book to everyone I know."
—Robert L. Leahy, PhD, Clinical Professor of Psychology, Department of Psychiatry, Weill Cornell Medical College, New York–Presbyterian Hospital
"An experienced psychiatrist who is also a skilled CBT practitioner, Dr. Sudak has done a masterful job in discussing how pharmacological management and CBT can be integrated. . . [She] provides case vignettes to illustrate her points. This book is a valuable addition to any clinician's library."
—Cheryl Carmin, PhD, Professor and Director, Cognitive Behavior Therapy Program, University of Illinois at Chicago
Evidence-based guidance for optimally coordinating CBT with drug therapy for a range of main presenting problems
An expert in both CBT as well as psychopharmacology, Dr. Sudak explores the effects of psychotherapy and medication on the brain, based on recent neuroimaging and neurobiological studies. This volume breaks new ground in bringing together the latest proven protocols for using medication and CBT to improve client care for common clinical presentations such as:
Major depression
Bipolar disorder
Anxiety disorders
Eating disorders
Schizophrenia
Borderline personality disorder
Substance abuse and dependence
With strategies to enhance collaborative treatment and avoid ethical dilemmas that can arise, Combining CBT and Medication equips practitioners to recommend a sequence or combination of treatments for clients that are safe and lasting, while delivering cost-effective, efficient care.
