This volume collects Paine’s most significant political and philosophical writings, most notably Common Sense and Rights of Man. Whereas Common Sense defends the right of the American colonies to liberate themselves from the hereditary rule of the King George III and the British Empire, Rights of Man defends the French Revolution and the priority of inalienable human rights over the sovereignty of the monarch. One of the most significant intellectuals in American history, Paine’s writings still offer insight into the political tribulations of the modern day.
