In many general acarological papers it is stressed that acarology as a science is relatively young. Knowlege of the mite fauna is available for only an estimated 5-10% of the existing species. More than two-thirds of the species mentioned in this monograph have been described only during recent years. This volume analyses morphological characters and their evolutionary tendencies, based on more than 200 species worldwide. The author proposes a classification of the Phthiracaroidea according to a cladistic procedure and he subdivides the superfamily into two families, three subfamilies, five tribes, nine genera and four subgenera. Diagnoses of the superior taxons are presented, with comments on those genera regarded as synonyms.
