This note is one of a series which is generally concerned with the linguistic study of the formation of Chinese characters.l It offers a particular treatment of one aspect of the general study. In this preface 'we wish to establish a frame of reference for placing the treatment of fered here within the general study. To that end we will initiate a discussion of the formation of Chinese characters and will successively focus our attention on less general aspects of it until the treatment in this note is reasonably well characterized.
