Excerpt from List of Books Forming the Reference Library in the Reading Room of the British Museum, Vol. 1: Authors
The first edition of the catalogue of books on the ground floor of the Reading Room was published by the Trustees under the title of List of the 'books of Reference in the Reading Room of the British Museum in the year 1859, two years after the present Reading Room was opened. It contained an introduction by Mr. J. Winter Jones, Keeper of Printed Books from 1856 to 1866 and Principal Librarian from 1866 to 1878, which gives the fullest account extant of the earlier state of the Library and of the origin and construction of the circular Reading Room and of the Iron Library which surrounds it. This introduction has been reprinted in the present work, and is well worth reading by all who are interested in the British Museum. A second edition was published in 1871 and a third in 1889, each recording the changes in the Reference Library and the improvements in the Reading Room which had taken place since its foundation.
