British Civilization introduces all the important aspects of contemporary Britain to students of English language and British Studies. The themes surveyed include the people, political institutions, international relations, the legal system, economic and industrial institutions, social services, education, the media, religion and leisure. Each chapter consists of one theme and is structured with descriptive material and illustrations, a section on attitudes of British people towards the theme and exercises and essays at the end to test comprehension. This fifth edition has been extensively revised including: updates bringing the material covered up to 2001; a combined chapter on Political Institutions and Local government, focusing on devolution and its effects; the introduction of more debate and 'cultural' material; new further reading sections at the end of each chapter; an updated set of illustrations.
