Reseña del editor

The number of people in institutions for the intellectually disabled in Britain, Scandinavia and the USA has fallen markedly over the last 25 years. Deinstitutionalization and Community Living reviews the changes that have taken place, identifies the lessons that have been learned and highlights the issues that remain to be addressed. The book is divided into four parts, the first of which deals with the closure of institutions and includes discussion of the closure process at the service and national level. Part Two focuses on models of community services and includes material on 'supported living' and on the model of care in community services. Part Three describes the impact of deinstitutionalization on service users in a range of studies in the countries involved and Part Four is concerned with the effect of deinstitutionalization on families and their perceptions of the process. The editors provide an overview of the pattern of policy and service development and an introduction to the major issues, together with a concluding chapter that integrates the diverse experiences of the different countries.
