This thesaurus has been devised and compiled to allow the user to locate, quickly and efficiently, taxonomic and common name data on any animal species occurring in Europe. It is a two volume reference work containing 150,000 names of animals in 12,000 entries. Written in six languages it gives comprehensive coverage of all European animal species, including birds and fish (whether naturally occurring, or introduced and now established in Europe). All headwords are in Latin followed by their equivalent in German, English, French, Hungarian, Spanish and Russian. Speakers of any of the six languages can find the species of interest using the common name index. In each language the standard name and also applied zoological, preferred names and synonyms, dialectal, obsolete, misapplied and misleading names are given. Grammatical gender of vernacular names is also shown. Common names and synonyms are indexed alphabetically. The three most important zoosystematic taxa - phylum, class and order - appear in italics after the scientific name. These help in surveying the hierarchy and thus in classification of the species.
