Historical Change in the Physical Environment. This book provides guidance to the historical sources available for studying the physical environment over the last 10 000 years. It also reviews a number of case studies which have used historical material and assesses their contribution to general understanding of the rate,scale and importance of changes in the physical environment on the historic timescale. These reviews demonstrate the rapidity of change, the impact of man on the physical environment, and highlight the value of historical sources in such studies. Many environmental scientists lack the specialist knowledge and training to utilize historical sources to their fullest advantage. For them the book provides guidance oti how to find and use sources in archives and libraries, describes the content of particular sources, and discusses methods of checking and analysing historical data. Sources examined in the book include manuscript and printed maps and plans, survey notes, newspapers and topographic accounts. An international perspective is provided by drawing examples of sources and case studies from Great Britain, North America, Australasia, East and West Europe, the USSR and China. Environmental reconstructions in geomorphology, hydrology, biogeography and ecology, climatology and geophysics are considered and examples ofmorphological analysis, analysis ofevents and processes, and the study ofcauses ofchange' in the physical environment are discussed.
