Descripción First Dublin edition. 4.75 x 6.75 inches. First London edition was printed in the same year 1771, but this Dublin edition is much rarer. By John Millar - Professor of Laws in the University of Glasgow (1735-1801). xi, 240 pp. Contents: Of the Rank and Condition of Women in Different Ages; Of the Jurisdiction and Authority of a Father Over his Children; Of the Authority of a Chief Over the Members of a Tribe or Village; Of the Rise of a Sovereign Over an Extensive Society; and the Advancement of a People in Civilization and Refinement; Of the Condition of Servants in Different Parts of the World. This is Millar's most important work, and is one of the finest and earliest examples of an empirical approach to sociology. Millar was a supporter of the American cause and an opponent of slavery - both these aspects appear in the final chapter. Text mostly bright and clean, except for occasional patches of browning. Binding sound and tight. Bound in full contemporary tan leather. Gilt banded decoration on spine. Bottom of spine cracked for about one inch in centre. Top of spine rubbed. Small section of bottom of spine rubbed away and short split (1cm) at back board. Edges of spine lightly rubbed. Corners bumped and rubbed. Small strip of leather (1cm) rubbed away at front edge. Surface of boards in good condition except for minor rubbing in places. Overall condition Good+. Nº de ref. del artículo: 3722
