Instead we discover through early drawings and photographs the exciting variety and dynamism of urban civilization in such ancient cities as Great Zimbabwe, Benin, Timbuktu, Sofala, and Kano. After tracing the origins of urbanism in Africa, the author examines the very fabric of urban lifethe arts, governance, law, education, and social stratificationand reveals how those facets of urban civilization influenced architectural styles and urban layouts or designs. We find that urban Africa was not static but constantly changing to meet the demands of a population in constant transformation. Finally, the author identifies and evaluates the factors contributing to urban decay and the efforts made by urban leaders to halt it. .
