Robert Sedlack is a brave new voice on the Canadian literary scene, and The African Safari Papers is a compelling portrait of a family's disintegration in a hostile land. Deeply troubled but defiantly sardonic, 19-year-old Richard Clark agrees to go on a safari in Kenya with his parents, Ted and Janet. Accompanying them on their increasingly bizarre journey through the game parks of Kenya is their enigmatic African guide, Gabriel.
Through Richard's wickedly humorous and voyeuristic journal entries, which perfectly capture the raw voice of a desperate young man searching for truth, we watch as Janet's looming madness, Ted's drinking, and Richard's own drug abuse threaten to tear their lives apart.
As family secrets are exposed, Richard is forced to confront his own dark link to his mother. Meanwhile, the reader watches mesmerized, on edge with guilty laughter, as events unravel into a shocking climax.
