Jeroen, a 12-year-old Dutch boy, is evacuated to a small Friesland fishing community in the winter famine of 1944. He forms a relationship with a Canadian soldier, which is curtailed when the liberating forces move on, and Jeroen eventually searches for the soldier back home in Amsterdam.
