Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the complex history of the French protectorate in Annam, a region known today as northern Vietnam. The author traces the origins of French influence in the region, from early diplomatic missions in the 1600s to the establishment of a protectorate in the late 1800s. Through a detailed examination of treaties, correspondence, and firsthand accounts, the book sheds light on the political, economic, and cultural factors that shaped the relationship between France and Annam. The author argues that the French protectorate was a flawed and ultimately unsustainable arrangement, marked by paternalism, economic exploitation, and cultural misunderstandings. However, the book also explores the positive aspects of French influence, such as the introduction of modern infrastructure and education. Ultimately, this book provides a nuanced and engaging account of a complex and often overlooked chapter in the history of Southeast Asia.
