The German revolutionary movement Of 1918 and 1919 not only destroyed the Bismarckian Empire but fundamentally altered the life and institutions Of the German people. Although it has as yet received little attention from historians, a knowledge Of the revolution is essential to an understanding of contemporary Germany and Of those economic and political problems resulting from the defeat Of the German Empire in the World War. This monograph is a study of the origins, events, tendencies, and results of the German Revolution based upon personal Observations and an examination Of the documentary and other printed materials available. AS a member Of the American Military Mission in Berlin under the command of General George H. Harries, from March to August, 1919, the author had Opportunities to Observe the revolutionary struggles in the capital as well as in the several states.
