Excerpt from The German Language: In One Volume; Containing I. A Practical Grammar With Exercises to Every Rule; II. Undine, a Tale, by De La Motte Fouque, With Explanatory Notes on All Difficult Words and Phrases; III. A Vocabulary of 4500 Words, Synonymous in German and English
I do not hesitate to call the construction of the German language easy. In simple sentences it is the same as in English. When a compound tense of the verb occurs in a sentence, the participle or infinitive is placed at the end, whilst the auxiliary verb keeps its place after the nominative or subject, thus enclosing the other parts of the sentence in the verb. There are some words that always require the auxiliary verb at the end, but these once known will always guide the student. Again, words Will be found placed in an order different from what they would be in English. The reason is, that the writer or speaker may place his words at will, giving those first which he thinks most important. Explanations have been given which will show the student that construction need not cause him much trouble, provided he attend to the few rules that must be observed under all circumstances.
