The absence of any such guide to the study has induced him to prepare this work, which he trusts will be useful not only to the student as a Text - book, but also to the manufacturer as a book of reference. The results arrived at by the completion Of this work, will be greatly-enhanced in their value to practical men, when assured that a life-time Of actual service in the mills of this country and Europe has been enjoyed by the author, and that the ripe experience of such practical knowledge has been closely interwoven with the results herein fully set forth.
