The author of this text experienced a personal "awakening" from years of computer worship to the unwelcome side-effects of information mania. After confronting his own information anxieties and deflating what he saw as his mislaid faith in the virtue of technology, he began to see the world of information and information technology in a new light. He saw an industry whose raison d'etre is inducing a "you're-not-keeping-up" anxiety, a culture hooked on the manic velocity of data and losing interest in slower, more thoughtful deliberation. He now believes this deluge of information and the culture it fosters, fragments the world to a perverse degree, losing its common information and allowing it to drift towards a less responsible democracy. With this examination of the current state of affairs, he shows that information is not necessarily knowledge or wisdom, and that too much data can dull the mind.
