Críticas

Hodder's Living Language, Living Literature and Living Language & Literature, at twice the length of their Heinemann equivalents, are denser, more thorough texts. Designed to fulfil the assessment objectives for all examining boards, they include extracts from an impressive range of texts. -- Times Educational Supplement 20011006 In Living Literature, Myszor and Baker attempt to offer broad perspectives in literature for students fresh from GCSE, whilst demonstrating at every turn the importance of close textual analysis. The first four chapters, exploring ideas about texts, the contexts of writing and the contexts of reading, are the most original and engaging sections of the book. Students are challenged to consider ways of defining literature and are given an imaginative series of creative approaches to reading and writing about different texts. The stimulus material is pithy and provocative, and often followed by rigorous commentaries on the short texts under consideration, making many of the early activities excellent for group work in class at any point in an A Level course. Two short texts, for instance, that prove to be rich resources for analysis are Edward Thomas's poem 'Thaw' and Jeffrey Whitmore's 53 word 'Bedtime Story.' The thesis behind Living Literature is that literature, like language itself, is constantly changing... The authors' enthusiasm... informs their writing with a vigour and energy noticeably lacking in Croft and Cross's rather lukewarm assurance of 'Success in English Literature' [OUP]. There are even moments of comic asides in Living Literature... as if Myszor and Baker just cannot help enjoying themselves in their play with language and theory. ...Two text books hot on the heels of the new specifications: Living Literature is undoubtedly the most substantial and thought-provoking of the two... -- The English and Media Magazine No. 46 20020601 Excellent in every way. -- L Kelly, Pershore High School 20000721
