The two men responsible for the work can be seen, together with their wives, in the foreground of the picture. This both couples: John and Nora Stevenson, and Walter and Arabella Thornton. When the story opens, John Stevenson, 36, is a mere foreman of a ganag of navvies. But an accident bankrupts the contactor and gives John the chance t take on the entire working.
