Sinopsis
This volume examines several aspects of the syntax of imperative clauses in English and in a variety of other Germanic languages in the context of the challenge that apparent optional movement poses for the Minimalist Programme. At a more general level, the book engages in current debate on one of the key issues in syntactic theory - the motivation for displacement operations in natural language. It should be of particular interest to students and researchers in English and Germanic and in general issues of syntactic theory.

LAURA RUPP is a Lecturer in English Language and Linguistics at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. She undertook her doctoral research at the University of Essex.
