This biographical and critical study of Tennyson aims to show what went into the making of the man, exploring the power, subtlety and variety of his poems, along with the artistic principles and preoccupations which shaped his life's work. Two appendices deal with "The Charge of the Light Brigade" and "Ode on the Death of the Duke of Wellington". The author has written a number of books including "Milton's Grand Style", "Keats and Embarrassment", "The Force of Poetry" and "T.S. Eliot and Prejudice". He has edited "The Poems of Tennyson", "The New Oxford Book of Victorian Verse", "A.E. Housman: Collected Poems and Selected Prose" and "The Tennyson Archive".
