Al disolverse en 1830 la antigua República de Colombia, quedó el Estado de Venezuela (hoy Estados Unidos de Venezuela) lindando por el occidente con la Nueva Granada (boy República de Colombia), por el sur con el Im perio del Brasil (hoy Estados Unidos del Brasil) y por el oriente con la Guayana inglesa. Formaron el límite natural al norte, el Océano Atlántico y el mar de las Antillas, en un es pacio de 260 leguas de costas.
