Tamas, king of the Rutuli, was the first who opposed Eneas, he having long made pretensions to Lavinia himself. A war ensued, in which the Trojan here was victorious, and Towns slain. In consequence of this, [eneas built a city which was called Larinium, in honor of his wife: and sometime after, engaging in an other war against Mezentius, one of the petty kings of the country, he was vanquished in turn, and died in battle, after a reign of four years.
