Their rarity as fossils has undoubtedly militated against the recognition and acceptance of their higher categorical Signifi cance in echinoderm classification. Yet when confronted by a demonstrably unique and basically new scheme of organization, even though a paucity of material is at hand, there is much to be said for pointing up the evolu tionary import of the novelty by creating the taxonomic structure seemingly required.
