Excerpt from The Cornell Wordsworth Collection: A Catalogue of Books and Manuscripts Presented to the University by Mr. Victor Emanuel, Cornell 1919
Upon the death of Mrs St John in 1919, the collection was offered for sale. No immediate purchaser appeared; the price, quite justly, was high. The books were removed from Ithaca to be exhibited elsewhere, and a number of rival institutions appointed committees, summoned supporters, and began to collect funds. At that point Mr Emanuel came forward, acquired the library, and returned it to Ithaca as a gift to his university.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book collects over 3200 pieces from the Cornell Wordsworth Collection, one of the world's most extensive gatherings of scholarship on the Romantic writer. Begun in 1925 by Mrs. Victor Emanuel, the collection grew for forty years with the help of the author's son, Professor L. N. Broughton. Since 1965, Cornell Wordsworth scholars have further built upon their predecessor's work. As a result, this volume includes everything of substance that has been written about Wordsworth, offering a record of how the author has been read and interpreted over almost two centuries. Wordsworth's own writings make up Part I of this collection. Part II covers editions published since the author's death. Parts III through VIII survey early periodicals, anthologies, and books that further illuminate Wordsworth's life and writings. Finally, Part IX allows readers to explore the Cornell Wordsworth Collection's wealth of manuscripts. The collection is an invaluable resource for scholars interested in Wordsworth's work and in the history of literary study.
