Excerpt from Manual of the Rhode Island Institute of Instruction
A History of American Literature. By Moses Coit Tyler. Vols. I, II. New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons.
To select from the vast field of literature one book for the Reading Circle is to impose a task equal to that of solving the riddle of the Sphinx. It ought to be one interesting to all intelligent readers and valuable for its learning. Such a one it is believed A History of American Literature will be found to be.
Thus far only two volumes have been published which treat of the period from 1607 to 1765, the year of the Stamp Act. It may be thought that the early literature of this country could not prove interesting, but Prof. Tyler has succeeded in discussing the subject in so attractive a style that his book is delightful to read. In giving the lives of the authors much light is thrown upon the manners and customs of the early days while many extracts from their writings are interesting, often racy. Capt. John Smith, John Cotton, Wigglesworth, the Mathers, Jonathan Edwards, and a host of other Puritan worthies are vividly portrayed. To Roger Williams is accorded such praise for his virtues that the most ardent Rhode Islander Will be gratified.
