Sinopsis

*The award-winning, celebrated playwright and sciptwriter, twin brother of Peter Shaffer, here pens his compelling and at times hilarious memoir* Evacuated to Wales during the war, Anthony and Peter Shaffer developed an unquenchable will to win, and a hunger for success, that persist today in their 75th year. This anecdote-packed memoir takes us from Anthony's early, anonymous crime writing days with his brother, to his years as a gifted copywriter in advertising, through to his experiments with law. In 1971 his life changed with the production of Sleuth, which became the most famous play of its time. He got to know many actors well, including Lawrence Olivier, and worked closely with Alfred Hitchcock and Agatha Christie (he was the one responsible for transferring The Mousetrap to the theatre it was never to leave). More than just a portrait of a bygone age and a life lived to the full, So What Did You Expect? is also a work of revealing social and personal history. A must-read for anyone who has ever been hooked by the cult works of this great writer.

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. Jacket illustration after the 'Sleuth' logo Ilustrador. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression with full number line. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED AT LENGTH BY SHAFFER'S LOVER MARIE JOSETTE 'JO' CAPECE MINUTOLO, IN BLACK PEN, ON FF ENDPAPER ' To Arthur, Tony's cherished friend who is fondly remembered in his memoir, with sincere thanks from me for being so supportive after my tragic loss. Tony's joy at seeing you again during his last days touched him deeply. Bless you, Arthur - Love Jo. 29 xi 2001 London'. The 'Arthur' to whom the book is inscribed is Arthur Davidson (1928-2018), QC and Labour MP (under Harold Wilson and Jim Callaghan) for Accrington. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, tiny puncture hole to top spine, some very faint grubby marks to largely white jacket, slight lean, not price clipped (£16.99), no other inscriptions, internally clean and tight, overall an interesting and vg+ copy. 222pp. Anthony Joshua Shaffer (1926 - 6 November 2001), was a British playwright, screenwriter, novelist, barrister, and advertising executive. He is best remembered for his Tony Award winning play 'Sleuth' and its acclaimed 1972 film adaptation, starring Lawrence Olivier. His screenplays included Alfred Hitchcock's' Frenzy' and folk horror 'The Wicker Man', starring Shaffer's third wife Australian actress Diane Cilento and Christopher Lee. Anthony Shaffer had moved to Australia in 1975 and married Cilento in 1985. Together they built a house and a theatre. Shaffer was legally domiciled in Australia (where he owned land and a restaurant, paid taxes and voted in elections), although he did maintain a flat in London. In the last years of his life Shaffer had an extramarital relationship with 'Jo' Capece-Minutolo when in London. Cilento did not accompany Shaffer to England but remained in Australia. After Shaffer's death, Capece-Minutolo made a claim on his estate in the British High Court, arguing that Shaffer had intended to divorce Cilento and marry her and that he had given her an engagement ring. The Shaffer estate argued that Shaffer had no desire to end his marriage to Cilento. The judge found that despite Shaffer's being in 'an intimate and loving relationship' with Capece in London, Shaffer and his estate were not legally domiciled in the United Kingdom at the time of his death, and that therefore Capece-Minutolo had no legal claims on his estate, other than any bequest in Shaffer's will, which had been changed in 1999. A scarce book, especially signed in this way. Nº de ref. del artículo: 012435
