While “missions” used to be the territory of experts and missionary professionals, globalization has made the issues and needs of our world accessible to average Americans. Many American Christians feel overwhelmed by the scope of the brokenness in the world and conclude all they can do is go on with their lives. Others respond by giving and praying, and still others want to do more. What Can I Do shows that global mission is something we all can be part of in tangible ways. And while that might include going on a short term mission trip or providing financial support, there are many more ongoing and holistic forms of engagement. This book helps readers see that the roles they already have―business leader, scientist, teacher, student, parent, or neighbor―can provide ways to engage in global mission. Mission is what we were created to do. It includes evangelistically calling people to follow Jesus wherever we go, whatever we do. But it’s more than that. This book will help us explore the way our ordinary, everyday tasks of work and life can be part of God’s mission to heal a broken world.

DAVID LIVERMORE, PH.D., is President and Partner at the Cultural Intelligence Center. He has done training and consulting for leaders in more than 100 countries and is the author of The Cultural Intelligence Difference.
Most people feel guilty when they hear about the high death rates among kids in sub-Saharan Africa, see a documentary about women trafficked for sex in Southeast Asia, or watch news reports about people running for their lives in war-torn regions. But most of us don't have a clue what we can really do about it. Created for Mission helps Christians see that global mission is something we all get to be part of in very tangible ways. Although that might include going on a short-term missions trip or providing financial support and prayer, this book helps readers see ways their existing jobs, relationships, and circumstances can be used as a way to make a difference in the world. The book begins by stirring our imaginations to do something about the global issues facing all of us near and far. It calls us to move from guilt to action and helps us see that mission is what we were all created to do. The middle section of the book is packed full with stories and ideas for how to connect our lives with the pressing issues of our day. Stories include business leaders grappling with the ethical issues of globalization, school teachers influencing students to improve the lives of others, artists painting portraits of homeless people, and aunts, grandparents, baristas, factory workers and many others who are bringing heaven to earth. The book concludes with a process for individuals and groups to discern how they can get engaged globally. Specific questions and suggestions are offered for how to make global service a reality for all of us. Livermore writes, 'An injustice like extreme poverty requires apathy by others to continue. Environmental decay will keep making life worse for people around the world if we turn a blind eye. Feeling paralyzed by the despair of human trafficking does little to help those who are trafficked. God is making his appeal through us. It's time for us to 'Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves....Defend the rights of the poor and the needy!' (Prov. 31:8-9). There are lots of ways you can speak up, show up, and stand up. Created for Mission gives you a pathway to connect the things you're already doing with responding to the important causes of our day.'
