Excerpt from Elliptic Integrals
The underlying theory, the philosophy of the subject, I have attempted to give in my larger work on elliptic functions, Vol. I. In the preparation of the present monograph much use has been made of Greenhill's Application of Elliptic Func tions, a work which cannot be commended too highly; one may also read with great advantage Cayley's Elliptic Functions. The standard works of Legendre, Abel and Jacobi are briefly considered in the text. It may also be of interest to note briefly the earlier mathematicians who made possible the writings just mentioned.

This book delves into the fascinating world of elliptic integrals, mathematical objects that arise from calculating the lengths of curves like ellipses and hyperbolas. While the elementary calculus provides tools for integrating simpler expressions, this work tackles the challenge of integrating expressions involving more complex curves. The author guides the reader through the historical development of elliptic integrals, highlighting the contributions of mathematicians like Fagnano, Bernoulli, and Legendre. The book then introduces the three standard types of elliptic integrals and demonstrates how they can be transformed into normal forms for easier computation. Through detailed explanations and illustrative graphs, the reader gains an understanding of the properties and applications of these integrals. The book also explores the connection between elliptic integrals and elliptic functions, revealing their doubly periodic nature and showcasing their significance in higher analysis. Ultimately, this book illuminates the profound link between geometry and analysis, offering a valuable resource for anyone seeking to explore the intricacies of elliptic integrals and their enduring impact on mathematics.
