Building on earlier work by Jean Louis Petit and Ricord, the author argues that the syphilitic nature of certain symptoms can be determined not just by their timing but also by their physiological and anatomical characteristics. These late manifestations, he says, cannot be explained as the result of mercury treatment, as some then believed, because they can occur in patients who have never received this treatment. The author presents his own research alongside that of his contemporaries and predecessors, and examines the differences between secondary and tertiary symptoms, arguing that while some secondary symptoms are contagious, all tertiary symptoms are not. The author also discusses which symptoms belong to each stage and which organs are most commonly affected, examining in detail the alterations of bone, joints, muscles, internal organs, and the brain caused by syphilis. His work helped to establish the pathology of this disease and contributed to the understanding and treatment of late syphilis.
