Others, have deemed Lanark to be the Ugrulentum of the anonymous geographer of Ravenna, and not without some degree of probability. Baxter's derivation however of ug-j fulcrum): from the W elib tiger lent, which as he says, sig nifies ripe: hamidi, ill/091143, is totally inapplicable, to the situation of Lanark, it being situated on a dry and elevar ed situation, 292 fter t inch above the level of the Clyde. He is equally unhappy in his etymology of Lan ark, which he derives from Lat: a'rr'g, i. E. Ripa flumtnts this town not being situated within view of the river, nor upon its immediate bank, but about half a mile from it.'
