Excerpt from Elements of Geometry, Geometrical Analysis, and Plane Trigonometry: With an Appendix, and Copious Notes and Illustrations
We should form a wrong estimate, however, did we consider the Elements of Euclid, with all its merits, as a finished production. That admirable work was composed at the period when geometry was making its most rapid advances, and new pro spects were Opening on every side. No wonder that its structure should now appear loose and defee tive. In adapting it to the actual state Of the sci.' ence, I have therefore endeavoured carefully to te tain the spirit of the original, but have Sought to enlarge the basis, and to dispose the accumulated materials into a regular and more compact system. By simplifying the order of arrangement, I presume that I have materially abridged the labour of the student. The numerous additions which are incor porated in the text, so far from retarding, will ta ther facilitate his progress, by rendering more con tinous the chain of demonstration.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is an impressive and wide-ranging investigation into the history and development of geometry, a field of study that has shaped our understanding of the natural world for centuries. Beginning with the fundamental notions of space and measure, the author traces geometry's path from ancient origins to its present-day applications, elucidating the mathematical discoveries of Euclid, Archimedes, and Newton along the way. Along the way, the author explores the profound impact that geometry has had on art, architecture, navigation, and even music. Through clear explanations and visually engaging illustrations, this book provides a comprehensive and captivating introduction to the ideas that underpin geometry.
