Excerpt from Introduction to Physical Science
Things that affect our senses directly are called mat ter, stone, water, air, etc. It is believed that there exists something that does not affect the senses directly, something that fills all the space of the universe, called the ether. We Shall find, as we proceed, that all changes in the appearance of objects are accompanied by motion. Physics is the science which treats of matter and its motion, and of vibrations in the ether.
