Excerpt from Syphilis and Local Contagious Disorders
As the syphilitic virus is not now supposed to be the cause of all venereal sores, the local contagious ulcer, or chancre, is treated in a separate division of the book.
Syphilis is a constitutional disorder from the first the effects of the virus may penetrate every organ of the body while the disease is in progress, and continue perceptible until the poison grows inert or languishes in some local sequela. Not long ago it was impossible to describe the whole course of Syphilis, for it is only recently that we have been able to assign to their true origin the numerous lesions which are now recognized as common sequences of the disease.
