Hymns From the Rigveda is a scholarly edition that presents the revered Vedas with Sayana’s commentary, notes, and a translation by Peter Peterson. This volume aims to make the Rigveda accessible to students and researchers, while staying faithful to the ancient text and its traditional interpretation.
The editor explains how the text is prepared for study, with careful editorial choices to reflect manuscript evidence, printer’s proofs, and scholarship from multiple traditions. It includes Sayana’s commentary alongside modern notes and an English translation, making it a useful resource for classroom study or independent exploration of Vedic hymns and their context.

Excerpt from Hymns From the Rigveda: Edited With Sayana's Commentary, Notes, and a Translation
The Hymns from the Rigveda in this volume are those appointed to be read by candidates for the degree of B. A. In the University of Bombay; and the book is little more than an attempt to furnish students here with the material without which anything like a full study, or commencement of study, of the Rigveda is hardly now practicable. I h0pe it may be accepted as a text-book in other Universities, in India or elsewhere, where Sanskrit is studied. But my primary object has been to fulfil a pledge, given I do not like to think how long ago, when I induced the University of Bombay to lead the way in making some knowledge at least of the Rigveda part of the ordinary qualification for a degree in. Sanskrit.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the ancient hymns of the Rigveda, specifically those chosen for study by students of Sanskrit. The author's primary objective is to provide the essential resources for a comprehensive understanding of these sacred texts, originally composed in Vedic Sanskrit, the precursor to classical Sanskrit. Dating back to around 1500-1000 BCE, the Rigveda stands as one of the oldest Indo-European religious texts. This book offers a meticulous analysis of select hymns, delving into their linguistic nuances, grammatical structures, and the rich tapestry of mythology and symbolism woven within their verses. Through detailed commentary, the author unveils the multifaceted nature of the hymns, exploring themes of cosmology, social order, and the intricate relationship between humanity and the divine. The hymns illuminate the beliefs and practices of the early Vedic people, offering insights into their rituals, their understanding of the natural world, and their profound reverence for the forces that shaped their existence. By bridging the gap between the ancient world of the Rigveda and contemporary scholarship, this book provides a valuable resource for anyone seeking to explore the depths of these timeless hymns and their enduring legacy.
