Excerpt from Mathematical Instruments, Their Construction, Adjustment, Testing, and Use: Comprising Drawing, Measuring, Optical, Surveying, and Astronomical Instruments
Upon the publication of the original edition of this treatise the author was very greatly and very agreean surprised by the large number of complimentary letters that he received from persons engaged in a variety of pursuits, many of whom were entirely unknown to him. The praises, thus liberally bestowed on his humble work, were supplemented by its introduction, as a text-book, into numerous educational establishments, and its selection by the Admiralty to form part of a midshipman's kit.

This book provides a comprehensive examination of the construction, adjustment, testing, and use of mathematical instruments, emphasizing drawing and measuring. Originally published in 1849, the author's work has become a standard text, used in educational establishments and selected by the Admiralty to form part of a midshipman's kit. This updated edition includes extensive revisions, with added information on optical instruments, surveying, and astronomical instruments. The author thoroughly describes the use of drawing boards, pens, and rulers, as well as more complex instruments such as the centrolinead and beam compasses. The book also covers techniques for drawing straight lines, arcs, circles, and ellipses. With its clear explanations and detailed illustrations, this book remains a valuable resource for engineers, architects, artists, and anyone interested in the use of mathematical instruments. It offers insights into the evolution of these instruments and their role in shaping the understanding of geometry, engineering, and related fields.
