Excerpt from An Inquiry Into the Difference of Style Observable in Ancient Glass Paintings, Vol. 1: Especially in England; With Hints on Glass Painting; Text
It is proper that I should make some observations on the plates which accompany this work. I had originally intended, in addition to the other illustrations, to give a general view of a window belonging to each style, and had prepared drawings for that purpose: but I was in duced to abandon the project, from a conviction that the usefulness of these plates would not be commensurate with the increased cost of the work. The difficulty of producing in a plate the eject of painted glass, has never yet been overcome, even in engravings of large size, and as it is enhanced by every reduction in the scale of the plate.
