"This is the first of four volumes which derive from expert panels brought together in 1985 by the US Council on Environmental Quality. The objective of this exercise was to evaluate existing environmental R&D activities in the USA and to define the most important areas for the concentration of scarce resources. The four panels covered human health impacts, geochemical and hydrological processes, ecological impacts, and monitoring and assessment. The subject areas of all four groups are outlined in this volume and their conclusions, when reported, should provide a baseline for future environmental research in the USA of considerable significance. . . .
