This is the first volume of the three-volume set, Random Counts in Scientific Work, that presents articles expanded from the proceedings of the Biometric Society Symposium held in Dallas, Texas (AAAS Conference). In these volumes leading scientists from the fields of mathematics, statistics, and applied disciplines investigate new and novel approaches and procedures for special types of counted data found in specific scientific problems. Detailed attention is given to the mathematical and statistical properties and natural applications of individual discrete distributions, and to the development of meaningful solutions to scientific problems generating or requiring counted data.
