Three years ago, when I first published these pages, I did so with some trepidation, knowing what a difficult task I had undertaken. Today I know that I was on the right track. The approval with which my work has been received, and the kindness with which its shortcomings have been overlooked, satisfy me that there was a real demand for it.

This encourages me to act upon the suggestion of my publishers, and to place before military readers a new edition, revised and partly rewritten. The adoption of the new Field Service Regulations, and the amendment of other manuals, made it necessary to intro duce a number of new forms and change many expressions. The increase in importance of machine guns and telephones rendered it desirable to give them consideration. The intro duction of the new kitchen wagons placed the whole matter Of subsistence on a new basis; it was impossible to omit mention of them, and of the duties of commissary Officers.
