In presenting the subject of design, a full discussion of the parts of the machines is first taken up, followed by complete demonstrations of design problems. The subject of armature windings receives special attention. Numerous winding diagrams are provided, indicating clearly the relative positions of the coils, pole pieces, and commu tator bars. The text accords with the best modern practice. The theory of the action of motors, their connections and the many systems of speed control are set forth in a clear and comprehensive manner. The importance of a knowl edge of alternating currents in the electrical-engineering profession is steadily growing. Illustrations and the graphical methods of treatment have been freely used.
